It's hard to explain exactly how students view a new teacher on the first day. They definitely will want to know who is in charge of the class. If it's not going to be you, it's going to be them. They know this, and they will test you just like the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park tested the electrified fence, looking for weak spots. So how can you carry yourself in your classroom so that you will assert that you're in control? There are many answers for this question, and many of them you'll have to come up with yourself as the year progresses. Here is a visualization technique that will put you on the right track:
Being a teacher can be scary from time to time, but it's nothing like being a lion tamer. Think about it: there are not extra large beasts that have picked up on the scent of a small, insignificant lion tamer. All he has to keep order is a whip, maybe a chair, and the empathy from the crowds of people that are watching with their breath held to see what will happen. As the tamer walks around the cage, he stares down these menacing animals as they growl and swat ferociously at the air.

And just then, he cracks that whip. The lions go into their motions doing all kinds of amazing things. They might leap upon a ball and balance themselves on it. They could jump through a ring of fire. So what keeps these big cats from realizing that if they worked as a team they could have a nice lion tamer snack? What makes them obey the commands of the insignificant man in front of them? What could he really do with that chair anyway?
Well, you will notice that the lion tamer will strategically enter and exit the cage. He is always in the cage first, and is the last to leave. Why does this matter? Because it sends the message to the lions that they are guests in the lion tamer's territory. This understanding might be implicit, but it nevertheless is comprehended. If the lions were to enter first, they would take the empty space as their own and would likely attack in defense of their territory.
Of course, in this visualization, you the teacher are the lion tamer. On the first day of school be the first one in your classroom. Don't come rushing in as the bell is ringing, and don't go roaming the hallways between classes. From the first bell to the last bell you want to show your students that you are in control of what happens in your classroom. Do this by keeping a calm and steady composure from the first minute of class.
